Halong Bay – Floating Village

On visit to Vietnam we stayed overnight on Halong Bay, and were rowed in a tiny woven-bamboo boat through floating villages. The fisher-people here live every day on the water, in huts on pontoons that float on blue plastic oil drums.

Belalie North Store

It was a brave shopkeeper in the early twentieth century who opened this shop next to the Belalie North railway station. The railway's long since disappeared as has the shopkeeper, but the building's still occupied. The three maiden McLeod sisters lived their lives in this house near Jamestown, using this stone bathroom, a little out-house off the side verandah.

Sorry, we’re closed. The highest-altitude grocer in South Australia trades no longer, since the railway was re-routed in the 1970’s to avoid the “Belalie Bank”, where they had to use a second locomotive in the steam days, to climb the hill to Belalie North.
